David Swenson: Ashtanga Yoga Workshops

Welcome back David Swenson, one of the world's foremost practitioners and instructors of Ashtanga Yoga. He returns to Honolulu to teach seven two-hour workshops over one weekend, open to all levels of practitioners. You likely already know David for his videos and book, "Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual." Now you can enjoy his informative classes, which he presents in an accessible, fun, and down-to-earth way.

David began practicing hatha yoga in 1969 at age 13, taught by his older brother Doug based on books they could find. Four years later he was introduced to Ashtanga by David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff. When Sri K Pattabhi Jois, the Ashtanga master, made his first visit to the US (to Encinitas in 1975) David Swenson was fortunate enough to be there. He initiated studies directly with Guruji and in 1977 made his first trip to Mysore where he learned the full Ashtanga system as it was originally taught. More information on his website

#1   Ashtanga Yoga: Exploring the FUNdamentals
Friday, March 9  6:30–8:30pm @ Purple Yoga
An introduction to Ashtanga Yoga open to all levels of experience. Explore the building blocks of Ashtanga Yoga through what David calls The Five Elements of Practice. A short discussion precedes an introductory flow through an abbreviated sequence from the First Series, ending with a guided deep relaxation. Learn about this dynamic and flowing system that is the root method for so many popular styles of yoga today.

#2   Second Series Guided Tour: Hop on the Bus and Enjoy a Ride Through Intermediate Asanas
Saturday, March 10  7:00–9:00am @ Purple Yoga
Many people are intimidated by the Second Series of Ashtanga, but it's a fun sequence! With compassion, patience and humor, David teaches as much of the series as seems appropriate for the group. He offers alternatives and guidance along the way and explains techniques to make the asanas more accessible. You should have a regular practice of the First Series to attend.

#3   Life, Love and Living with Purpose: Seeking a Path, Building Dreams and Finding Peace
Saturday, March 10  9:30–11:30am @ Purple Yoga
David shares stories, anecdotes and insights gained from more than 45 years of yoga practice and pursuits of spiritual life, love, health and adventure. David is a witty, humorous and inspiring storyteller, delivering his memorable tales of triumphs and bumps along the road of life with honesty and heartfelt sincerity. Our studio will be air-conditioned for the talk classes #3 and #5.
#4   Inversions and Backbends: Building Roots and Growing Confidence
Saturday, March 10  1:30–3:30pm @ Purple Yoga
David explores the unseen world of gravity, sharing methods to utilize this perpetual energy as a stabilizing force for creating roots from which we can grow into inversions and backbends with greater ease and confidence. He teaches ways to expand the front body, rather than collapse the back, in order to find greater depth in a backbend with less effort and more grace and efficiency.

#5   Eight Limbs and Daily Life: How Does this Practice Apply Within the Context of Daily Living?
Saturday, March 10  4:00–6:00pm @ Purple Yoga
Underlying the complex philosophy of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras there is a profound simplicity that may be applied within our daily lives. This class discusses the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga and explores their applications. We may memorize quotes from great writings but unless we apply them within the fabric of our life they are merely words spoken rather than knowledge realized.

#6   Really Hip Openings: A Pleasant Exploration of Gentle Methods to Open the Hips
Sunday, March 11  1:30–3:30pm @ Purple Yoga
Tight hips can cause problems in other areas such as the knees and back. David's explores the hips through slow and gentle movements, stable holding of postures and deep breathing, which all bring greater openness to the hips without force. To create stability, David shows ways to activate one area in order to relax another. This balanced approach can be applied to other body parts.
#7 Fully Led Primary Series Flow: Dancing with the Breath in a First Series Rhythm
Sunday, March 11  4:00–6:00pm @ Purple Yoga
Designed for those familiar with the First Series yet open to all levels, from the daily-practicing aficionados to the fit-it-in-when-I-can weekend warriors. Conducted like a train ride that flows from the sun salutations to the closing sequence. Prior to practice, David presents user-friendly alternatives to the more challenging asanas and jumping techniques. Ends with a deep relaxation.
